Direct mass measurements of neutron-deficient xenon isotopes with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer

2000

Abstract The masses of Xe isotopes with 124⩾ A ⩾114 have been measured using the ISOLTRAP spectrometer at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE/CERN. A mass resolving power of 500 000 was chosen resulting in an accuracy of δm ≈12 keV for all isotopes investigated. Conflicts with existing mass data of several standard deviations were found.

A direct determination of the proton electron mass ratio

1980

The cyclotron frequencies of free protons and electrons in a magnetic field of 5.81 Tesla with superimposed electrostatic quadrupole field have been measured. The increase of energy connected with a transition at cyclotron frequency is detected by the measurement of the time of flight through an inhomogeneous magnetic field. From the ratio of the measured cyclotron frequencies of both particles the proton electron mass ratio is deduced. The resultm p /m e =1,836.1527(11) agrees within the limits of error (0.6 ppm) with the value of the indirect determination.

Shell effects in damped collisions ofSr88withYb176at the Coulomb barrier energy

2014

This work is a study of the influence of shell effects on the formation of binary fragments in damped collision. We have investigated binary reaction channels of the composite system with $Z=108$ produced in the reaction $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$${+}^{176}$Yb at an energy slightly above the Bass barrier (${E}_{\text{c.m.}}/{E}_{\text{Bass}}=1.03$). Reaction products were detected by using the two-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET at the K130 cyclotron of the Department of Physics, University of Jyv\"askyl\"a. The mass-energy distribution of primary binary fragments has been measured. For targetlike fragments heavier than 190 u, which correspond to a mass transfer as large as twenty nucleons o…

Mass measurements on neutron-deficient Sr and neutron-rich Sn isotopes with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer

2005

Abstract The atomic masses of 76,77,80,81,86,88 Sr and 124,129,130,131,132 Sn were measured by means of the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. 76 Sr is now the heaviest N = Z nucleus for which the mass is measured to a precision better than 35 keV. For the tin isotopes in the close vicinity of the doubly magic nucleus 132 Sn, mass uncertainties below 20 keV were achieved. An atomic mass evaluation was carried out taking other experimental mass values into account by performing a least-squares adjustment. Some discrepancies between older experimental values and the ones reported here emerged and were resolved. The results of the new adjustment and their impact will be pr…

Observation of mass-asymmetric fission of mercury nuclei in heavy ion fusion

2015

Background: Mass-asymmetric fission has been observed in low energy fission of $^{180}\mathrm{Hg}$. Calculations predicted the persistence of asymmetric fission in this region even at excitation energies of 30--40 MeV.Purpose: To investigate fission mass distributions by populating different isotopes of Hg using heavy ion fusion reactions. Methods: Fission fragment mass-angle distributions have been measured for two reactions, $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}+^{142}\mathrm{Nd}$ and $^{13}\mathrm{C}+^{182}\mathrm{W}$, populating $^{182}\mathrm{Hg}$ and $^{195}\mathrm{Hg}$, respectively, using the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility and CUBE spectrometer at the Australian National University. Measurements were ma…
